event each year, according to a survey done by Market Strategies, a Livonia, Michigan, research firm. As Fortune 500 companies fire employees and do away with perks such as legal plans, more individuals are turning to insurance companies specializing in selling such coverage.

The National Resource Center for Consumers of Legal Services, a nonprofit research group, says that more than 40 percent of Americans are covered by a legal-insurance plan. For anywhere from $9 to $25 monthly, a lawyer from a network of participating law firms will assist you with a number of legal issues, including making calls or writing letters on your behalf, reviewing legal documents, drafting a will and even representing you in a traffic court.
