It's no secret: Identity theft is a major problem in America. Think you are not at risk? Unfortunately you are: Identity Theft Shield Plan Many people think identity theft (IDT) is only about credit cards. However, there are 5 common types of identity theft:
Your Protectection Driver's License - This happened to my sister's boyfriend's best friend. Someone stole his wallet then bought a car in another state. Later, the IDT thief got into a car accident. The best friend had to go to court numerous times since the other party in the accident charged the damages to the person to whom the car was registered to. Can you imagine how a DWI on your driving record will effect you? Social Security - This happened to me back in 1993 - 3 years after my partner & I started The Credit Alternative. I was vacationing in San Francisco when an IDT thief stole my wallet that contained my Social Security card. Of course, back then, identity theft wasn't as prevalent, thus warnings of not carrying your Social Security card in your wallet was virtually unheard of. It was a ring of identity thieves that used my card to do everything from getting a job in real estate in Oakland, CA to setting up several checking accounts. It took me 100s of hours and almost 2 years to finally bring the nightmare to an end. Medical - IDT thieves steal people's health insurance information. Lets say you get a bill for medical service that wasn't covered. However, you know you never received any services. You are told since it was not you who received the services, the medical representative can't discuss it with you due to HIPAA, but you still must pay. Are you going to try and fight this on your own? Today, there are many people who are without health insurance. Stealing other people's health insurance has become quite common. Character/Criminal - This type relates to someone who commits a crime and uses someone else's name when they get arrested. There was a story of a teacher who lost her job because a prostitute stole her purse, and then used her ID when she was arrested a couple of times. How do you prove to the school's principal it wasn't you? Financial or Credit - This is the most familiar type of IDT. Financial IDT can range from someone using your credit card without your authorization, to someone opening a new card in your name. Finally, one of the most serious forms of Financial IDT is when someone buys a house and gets a mortgage in your name. This can be very unpleasant, since so much of what we do today revolves around our credit score. Listen to a message about the Identity Theft Shield Plan.
